New research concerns the ecological impact of rising imports of utilized cooking oil (UCO) into the UK and Europe.
+
Chip fat and other oils are thought about waste, so when they are used to make [biodiesel](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608) it saves carbon emissions by displacing fossil oil.
+
But such is the demand across Europe that imports now represent majority of the UCO that's made into fuel.
+
According to the research study, external, there's no other way to prove these imports are sustainable.
+
Without any [testing](https://www.proactiveinvestors.com.au/ASX:MBT/Mission-NewEnergy-Ltd) of what's coming in, [specialists](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) think it is also ripe for scams.
+
Used cooking oil imports might boost logging
+
Consumers present ['growing hazard'](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159346/mission-newenergy-delivers-maiden-biodiesel-production-to-global-oil-major-24476.html) to tropical forests
+
Reducing emissions from transport is proving to be one of the most difficult challenges for governments all over the world.
+
They've motivated the use of biofuels as an important means of curbing carbon from cars and trucks and lorries.
+
Biofuels are typically a mix of and oil made from plants or vegetables.
+
The truth that these crops can be [re-grown](https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=/m/0cqd_rb) and take in more CO2 [implies](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/mission-newenergy) they counteract the carbon given off when used in engines.
+
Soy and palm oil were when commonly used as parts of [biodiesel](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/mission-newenergy) but this practice has actually been commonly discredited since it [motivates deforestation](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608).
+
So for the last decade or so, using utilized cooking oil has broadened massively as an [alternative feedstock](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159346/mission-newenergy-delivers-maiden-biodiesel-production-to-global-oil-major-24476.html) for fuel.
+
Chip fat and other waste oils have ended up being a crucial part of biodiesel with a reliable industry [springing](https://www.energy-xprt.com/companies/mission-newenergy-limited-36048) up throughout Europe to collect and process the item.
+
But with the amount of [biodiesel](https://www.marketscreener.com/quote/stock/MISSION-NEWENERGY-LIMITED-178469/company/) made from UCO increasing by around 40% every year since 2014, there merely isn't sufficient [chip fat](https://www.businessnews.com.au/Company/Mission-NewEnergy) to walk around.
+
According to a report from the project group Transport & Environment, external, [majority](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) of the UCO used in Europe is imported.
+
Their study recommends this is highly problematic when it comes to influence on the environment.
+
While UCO is thought about a waste product in the UK, in China, Indonesia and Malaysia it has long been utilized to feed animals. The [report raises](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MNEL) the question of what individuals in these nations are changing the UCO with, when it is exported.
+
In 2019, Malaysia exported 90 million litres of UCO to the UK and Ireland. Figures for their [exports](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) to other European countries aren't readily available but the flow of UCO is likely to be comparable.
+
With a [population](https://www.bloomberg.com/profile/company/MNELF:US) of around 33 million, that's close to three litres per head of utilized oil that's collected and exported to the UK and Ireland alone.
+
By comparison, Thailand, which has a population of 70 million people, handled to collect around 5 million litres of UCO in 2019.
+
"Because we are purchasing it, they have less used cooking oil to use on the important things that they were previously utilizing it for," said Greg Archer with Transport & Environment.
+
"And they're simply purchasing more virgin oil and that virgin oil is mostly palm oil, because that's the most affordable oil available.
+
"So indirectly, we're just encouraging more deforestation in Southeast Asia."
+
Another major issue with UCO is the suspicion of fraud.
+
Because of demand from Europe, the rate of UCO is typically higher than palm oil. The concern is that some dishonest traders are merely diluting deliveries of UCO with palm.
+
As oils of different types are blended in bulk for transport, and no screening of the products is performed, some experts think fraud is rife.
+
The suggestion of scams anywhere along the chain of supply is rejected by the European Waste-to-Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA), who say there are robust accreditation plans in place.
+
"It is commonly understood that the European Commission has taken [pertinent](https://www.abnnewswire.net/companies/en/31347/%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%A9%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%97-Mission-NewEnergy-%E0%B8%88%E0%B8%B3%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%94.html/4) steps to entirely suppress unsound market practices in [biofuel](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159346/mission-newenergy-delivers-maiden-biodiesel-production-to-global-oil-major-24476.html) markets," stated Angel Alberdi, EWABA's secretary general.
+
He states a new database being developed by the EU will make sure that trading, certification and sustainability information on all bio-liquids will have to be registered.
+
"The combination of [modified certification](https://www.zoominfo.com/c/mission-newenergy/346542889) plans and the pan-EU track and trace database will guarantee that no sustainability issues occur in the whole biofuels and [bio-liquids supply](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/51278-86) chain," he informed BBC News.
+
Others in the field are concerned that the database idea, which was first mooted in 2018, may not be effective in stemming thought scams.
+
The report from Transport & Environment points out that with shipping and air travel seeking to decarbonise by utilizing biofuels, need for UCO could double over the next decade.
+
"Rising the need beyond sustainable supply levels would increase these issues, and threats of utilizing 'fake' UCO, potentially resulting in indirect impacts such as logging."
